The NHC has said that Sandy is now moving at 25mph and the eye will make landfall in 5-6 hrs. But Hurricane winds well before that. Already Storm Force winds from New York down to Washington DC.

Sandy is a category one. Hurricane Katrina was larger, much larger. I've dealt with these things since 1969. But, well, sandy isn't the largest one I've been through.
This link will show you the hurricane force ring/oval along with the tropical storm winds area.
Hurricane winds 75 mph or higher.
Tropical force winds are 35-74 mph.
