That is no quirk, that's just right

That is a tough one. I have not spent enough time in the Portuguese speaking countries of South America to determine by sight if a person might speak Portuguese rather than Spanish. Don't want to get that one wrong.

It would be like saying 早晨好 to someone from Japan. The last man that knocked me down was Japanese. I never saw his foot.

Question 1: Not knowing Japanese, are you sure you would not be knocked out when saying this?

Question 2: If you are knocked out more often after saying something in the other persons language, shouldn't you first consult a dictionary before saying anything?

I was told Kanji and traditional chinese ideograms look pretty much the same. As I can only recognize 出口 and 入口, I can't really tell the difference. I only know you should avoid calling someone's mother a horse when trying to say good morning in Chinese. Is that what 早晨好 means in Japanese? Or he just got ofended by Ni Hao instead of Ohayou gozaimasu?

It is really not possible. The Brazilian population being a mixture of White European, Black African and Native South Americans, you can imagine you can find pretty much all looks. I used to be thought to be Dutch when I was there (until I opened my mouth). I have Brazilian friends you would swear they come from India.

We are anyway pretty used to people not knowing we speak Portuguese and not Spanish, since everybody else South of Texas does. But a Brazilian will answer "bom dia" if you say "buenos dias"...

I guess the old addage about the squeaky wheel works... they sent a tech out and replaced the modem, gave me some free credit, and all is good...

He was offended because I was "seeing" his girlfriend.
