There was a time when I was younger, that I did wish that I lived in a bit less civilized society...not because I wanted to be less civilized, but then found that the quality of life is not determined by what we have, but by what we are, and by how we relate to others. However, I have learned that whether civilized or primitive, we are not necessarily better or worse. To improve society, we must first improve ourselves, but actually, we can not do that by ourselves, but unfortunately, that is about as far as I can go in that direction.

When I look upon the current state of the world, I know that the dark storm is just over the horizon, but at my age, there is nothing that I can do about it, except close my eyes, because opening my mouth does no good.

Now I am very much on the same ~ seeker but I have to say that becoming a better person doesn't necessarily mean that one has to become more civlised and / or improve ourselves via the gathering of knowledge.
I honestly think that some people are just born good, bad and for a lot of individuals - indifferent to what is required to benefit society, and they are the individuals who like me for instance have taken many years to become what I have and believe in what I do, and I am suspecting that you are within that group that I come from.
I have done some pretty stupid and not so nice things during my life and in hindsight - hum if only - I would probably do what I have the same way because I knew no difference then.
Like you I am fast approaching the void and wonder how this chunk of universe dust has become what we have made it. It goes before saying that we as a species have made an awful mess of our "nest" and quite frankly they can clean it up as much as they like because to me the pollution is not just to go away - how can it when the planets population is growing exponentially biased towards over population. For example I heard quoted that the birth rate and death rates are well out of whack insomuch as there is 1/16th more humans born than die each year. Now I am no mathematician but even a dull minded individual as myself can see that that cannot be sustained forever.
Have you ever wondered why we have wars, or (and I am not making any judgmental points or even express my own views) why some individuals are same sex orientated? or that new diseases break out from reason knows where - I truly believe that this is a paradoxical way of nature attempting to stem the tide of human population growth.
For example take say mice and when the conditions are right they break out in plague proportions and what happens - those creatures that predate on them also multiply but they in turn decrease in numbers when the plague is over. But humans have no such system of population control in place and in fact do quite the opposite by sustaining life at all costs even when that life is in some cases unbearable or denigrating. .

Requirements for life as we know it are fast dwindling for a great number of us - while the ones such as we sit it out and ponder things that I find quite irrelevant such as space travel now if you can come up with a more ludicrous idea than that I'll eat my underwear. How can someone sit there and rave on about travel to Mars when that money or resources could be spent making the unfortunates of this planet life a little more bearable or happier. Do they even care I suspect not to me to mine Mars is a nonsense, and so what if we know there used to be life there or still is - it's of little help to us now or even probably ever will be.

Well I for one am hell bent on helping who I can for what time I have left - all I want is for someone to be happier than they would be otherwise. If I can do that then my life will not have been totally in vain. I don't have the resources of some but my thinking is if I cannot take it with me then use it now as long as my immediate family are provided a little something then I am happy to do whatever comes up.

    ICit2lol,

Despite the fact that you and I have some small differences in our perspectives, in every other way, we are of similar minds. It sounds as though you may do more in action to help others than I do, because I'm very limited in what I'm capable of. While charity is one of the highest virtues, I can only exercise it in by it's original definition...love. No one person can right the wrongs of the world, regardless of their wealth or influence. It requires many such people working in concert to make a true difference. The only way that I know of for that to happen is via the governments of the world to act as they should...for the betterment of all, but that is not what is happening...at this time. That betterment will never be realized simply by spending plans, but it would be a starting place.

I do not believe that people are necessarily born good or bad, because as you said, each of us are a combination of both. It is just that some of us choose to cling to the bad, while others cling to the good. We all make our own choices, some which we regret and others not. Man alone will never make this world the place that it should be, but it shall become so, despite man.

Yes seeker we are of very similar minds but I must say my friend that I don't do what I do out of charity more that I have been there in the ruts and holes that others are in now and because I consider them to be honestly genuine individuals I do what I can. Plus they are very personable to me and have helped me out on many occasions too. I am not particularly flush with money either but have the luxury of being able to do what I can and still live within my means and be comfortable.
Now it might sound a bit precious but I do get a buzz out of helping anyone who is in need of help - thats my real reward - if it makes them happy then it returns ten fold to me. Karma is real you know and I don't want to sound patronising or anything like that but I also get my rewards from belonging to a great group of people in here. I have said on many occasions that my outlook on life has changed even more so since becoming a member and I now have more friends than I know what to do with. Hey perhaps I could sell some off on Ebay LOL!!

Seriously though my family think I am quite mad because I give birthday presents well out of time because I have held the belief for a long time now that it is absolute stupidity to wait until it is the actual day and that getting the present even a couple of months in advance in my mind gives them the pleasure of it for that extra time - does that make sense?

Anyway I am not out to change the world but I can put a (tiny) dent in it eh?
