I agree with others, if you are going to watch or take in content, tablets are fine for this purpose. If you are like me and you type a lot (forums, facebook, emails, etc), you may find tablet typing to be horrendously slow and cumbersome. If I had to choose between the tablet and the laptop, there is absolutely no consideration. The laptop wins 100% of the time. If you were wondering, i have a 10" Asus Transformer tablet.
Thanks pparks1. Your comparison is what I was looking for. Others and yourself have convinced me that a laptop is more of what I want. Now, I just have to save the money.

I have an iPad, and an Acer AO721 Netbook with W7HPx64, and when I travel I prefer the Acer because I can do absolutely everything with it, heck it even has a camera (for Skype), for less than $300 bucks. Well, OK I put an SSD in it, and bought a small wireless mouse, but it's very cool and has a nice 1366x768 screen.

The ipad is fun for sitting on the sofa and catching-up with the day's events. The netbook is a real computer and all that implies. Your answer is "it depends". It depends on what you want/need to do with it.
