Now am just wondering how long does memtest take to run F5ing?
I have had it going for 4hours and 20 minutes so far and it is checking the Athlon cache and RAM and here is a message down the bottom of the screen saying Pass complete, no errors, press Esc to exit? Yet at the top the figures are running still and telling me it is test#8
It all depends on the machine and the amount of memory. When I run it for a final check it's gonna be for an all night deal while I sleep or whatever. Check out the following tutorial from our forum:
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
It'll show you which number to look for to feel confident that you're good. When I've run across a bad stick or slot it's usually shown up within 1 or 2 passes. When I run for 1 or 2 passes without errors I'll leave it run by itself and go do something else.
Hiyya F5ing now I think after having a close look at the screen I might have a problem with one stick or a slot - see pic.
It's been a few months since I've had to use it so I really can't say for sure. Watch the numbers thru the pass and see it they change accordingly. I don't find the need to run it that often so most times I've got to sit and analyze what it's showing to verify (especially if I haven't used it very recently).
I don't ever recall memtest not recognizing whatever the BIOS recognizes. If a stick is bad the BIOS usually sees it okay but memtest would pop up with yellow/red errors for that stick, and you can tell it's analyzing all installed memory (errors or not).
Watch those "Testing:" numbers on the right side of the screen.
Ok F5ing I have put one stick 1 in slot 1 and it comes up with a mournful drawn out RAM beep - put the stick 1 in slot 2 and the thing booted to memtest showing that 992 figure again.
Put stick 2 in slot one = same result put stick 2 in slot 2 = same result so I think I have a bad slot - slot 1 - nearest CPU.
I'll let the memtest run slot 2 with both sticks for good measure - thanks for the heads up!.
So that board has only two slots, and you've got two sticks?
Do you have info on that board? Boards can be picky about the order in which those slots get filled.
Yeah F5ing it is a Gigabyte GA-7VM400M GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket A - GA-7VM400M (rev. 1.x)
Now I can't see any specific requirements for the RAM but again I ma certainly no expert at these things. The thing that I cannot find out about though is the little blue switch alongside DDR1 slot and labeled SW1 it's set to "on" but what I cannot make out what is "on"?
Depending on what you reckon I'll try again just using one slot with 1GB of DDR 333

Note at the top of that page it mentions there are two versions of that board. The above link gets you to version 1, and from there I found the following about that switch:
The manual for version 1 of that board doesn't say much that distinguishes one slot from the other. Basically just found this:
The motherboard has 2 dual inline memory module(DIMM) sockets. The BIOS will
automatically detects memory type and size. To install the memory module, just push it vertically
into the DIMM Slot . The DIMM module can only fit in one direction due to the notch. Memory size
can vary between sockets.
Thanks F5ing I couldn't find the darn thing if I can't get theses Service packs on though I am going to throw in Ubuntu at least it is going to save me a lot of grief.
The most reliable method I've found for installing XP service packs was to install them on restarts. In other words, don't even bother trying to install an SP while the system is up and running, instead have it selected for install and do a shutdown/restart. There are also ways to slipstream them into an install (I've never done that though).
Also, for 32-bit XP I think you only need SP1 installed in order to go directly to installing SP3 (skipping SP2). It was either that or it was SP2 that could be installed without having SP1. Something like that anyway; one of the SP's could be skipped.
