Hello Joan,
........and it was this Goon who mentioned the Goons. In addition to Spike [who I knew] and Harry [that voice!], you can't forget Peter Sellers, and earlier on, Michael Bentine. Also large contributers were the 'intermission musicians', Max Geldray and his wonderful harmonica playing [up there next to Larry Adler], and Ray Ellington and The Trio.....great musicians all.
Spike could play a mean trumpet or cornet....and sometimes both, a very mean trombone, and an even more nasty Raspberry. At one of his 'intimate' performances, he traded raspberries with me throughout the entire show......I ended up with bruised lips.
........as a skinny knock-kneed lad, I sat in the Chesterfield with my Father, as the steam-radio faded in and out through the static and vainly belted out 'This is the BBC' Blah! Blaaaaaaah! "this is Maurice Greenslade and we bring you 'The Goon Show'...." Some of my childhood happiest memories.
Do not mention the Goons to Norm.....suffice to say that he sent me a DVD just before Yuletide with 137 of the Goon Shows on it.....love them all. Hence, you may note some of my responses to Norms Posts addressing him as 'Bluebottle'.
That is all. Sepoys say 'chapatti'!
