Ubuntu.. Anyone?

I always have 2 OS's on my laptop, recently it was Vista/Win7, but now its Win7/Ubuntu...

Is it just me or is Ubuntu somehow "snappier" than W7?? Im using the latest release of Ubuntu(9.04, cant wait 'till 9.10!)

But wow! This is one rockin OS!!!

They really should be charging money for it!!!

Anyone else on Ubuntu? Any problems? (And is it just me or is it like.. impossible to tweak ubuntu?)

Yes, I am a Ubuntu user for desktop machines. My preference is Redhat/CentOS distributions for Servers. For me, it just seems that more stuff works out of the box with Ubuntu and hence the reason that I stick to it as a desktop.

I've got no opinion on whether one is snappier than the other. They both serve different purposes for me. But I can say, that I have never been disappointed in the performance of my Ubuntu boxes...regardless of the hardware that they run on.

Problems with Ubuntu exist without question. It's the same for anything. It depends what you are doing, what hardware you are using and what skill level you bring to the table. I think without question the 2 biggest problems with any Linux distro are #1). Wireless driver support #2). video driver support. Most other things work very well out of the box.

As far as tweaking Ubuntu...you absolutely can tweak it. You can radically change the way it works and you can disable quite a number of services and such to improve upon boot times.

+1 to what pparks said. Ive been using ubuntu since 7.04... Ive been fortunate that the only problem that I had was with my speaker switch which was fixed with a mod of my xorg.confg file.... That being said, I rarely boot into Ubuntu since coming back to MS and Windows 7..

List to pparks, I consider him the Ubuntu Guru.

Anyways, I never really cared for 8.10 and 9.04 because I always had a sound issue, that required me to look up a work around (Ubuntu was trying to route the sound to my headphone jacks even if it was set for my speakers).

9.10 Alpha 4 didn't cure that problem, I'll try beta later today.

The MAIN reason I even bother with linux is just to give me something to play with.

I recently loaded Fedora on an old, unused desktop. I tried Ubuntu first, but I couldn't get the graphics to render correctly. Things like the min, max, and close buttons would remain on screen after the window was closed... the PC was too old to handle the graphics demand.

I like Fedora so far. I'd like it better if I could figure out why it crashes my wireless router after 15 - 20 minutes of on-line time... but other than that, its great.

Steve, is that the extend of the error? That error is specific to a wubi install, and usually indicates that the wubildr file was not found... If you really wish to give ubuntu a try, give it a small 5-10 gb partition and install a stable release... 9.04..

Oh I know it was a WUBI related thing. Thus not caring enough to ask for help.

I'll wait for the final release at the end of the month to try 9.10.
