Being RHEL 5, it should fit right in.

I got the invite, resurrected my Google account, and found what appeared to be an empty discussion.

Yes. I know what you mean. This certainly isn't an easy interface at the moment. I imagine you can only see me in your contacts list. I can't see you at all unless you are the guy with a number for a name.
I can see about 9 SF members and have had chats with Barman58 and Blackrose but I'm not sure whether you will be able to see them.
The problem is that some people have changed their email address from the one they gave me so I don't know who they are and can't invite them into a conversation.
At the moment this seems to function as advertised if you are both on Wave at the same time. Then you can have a live chat like IM only real time. Otherwise it's like email and you can leave emails for someone to pick up later.
I can't seem to find a notifier so I don't know whether someone is "pinging" me or whether I have a message.
I must say, I know this is a beta but I'm surprised at Google putting it out like this. It is difficult and a bit off putting.
I imagine Google will be updating it rapidly but at the moment I don't get it.
I have a thread in VIP. If you pm those guys I imagine they will tell their googlewave.com addresses.
I'm going to persevere just in case it is the "future of email" etc

Philf, if I had any invites left I'd send you one but I only got 20 and they're all gone.
As to what it is. Google are touting it as the future of email, IM, social networking and conferencing all rolled into one.
The idea is you can start a "wave" aimed at someone you know, IM chat with them in real time, pull other contacts into that conversation if you want to, edit each others posts or interject etc.
At the moment it is more like a development project than most betas I have used but I think it will be good eventually.
I imagine as it rolls out more invites will be sent out and you'll be able to get one though I hear of people selling invites on ebay.
I definitely wouldn't pay for it
