March 27, 2013: Over the years, the spacefaring nations of Earth have sent dozens of probes and rovers to explore Mars. Today there are three active satellites circling the red planet while two rovers, Opportunity and Curiosity, wheel across the red sands below. Mars is dry, barren, and apparently lifeless.

Soon, those assets could find themselves exploring a very different kind of world.

"There is a small but non-negligible chance that Comet 2013 A1 will strike Mars next year in October of 2014," says Don Yeomans of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program at JPL. "Current solutions put the odds of impact at 1 in 2000."

I didn't have much luck with PANSTARRS, but I hope some of you had a chance to see it.

It is approximately 1.24 Astronomical Units (AU) from the Sun, and fading into the distance.
Its still possible to view with binoculars at 3.7 Magnitude (MAG), but timing is critical to see it between twilight/dusk, and it getting lower in the horizon, adding in the cloud cover each evening, and I haven't been able to see it.

Interesting clip Anak wouldn't that be something else to see if it did hit?

Haven't seem much down this way but am still looking at present there is a very bright full moon in the early hours so seeing anything is difficult.

Shame cos I live out in the country away from any really large light sources. Have been trying to pick out the planets from the Stellarium views but the moon and the old eyes not being so good even with binoculars - my telescopes I can't use at all now - cataracts

One of the "Old Faithful" meteor showers of the year will be at its best this weekend, but the moon may interfere with the celestial display.
