Yes, computers were certainly an improvement over typewriters.

By 'tablets' I guess you mean mints? :)

No doubt that the availability of information has been an incredible jump.

Someone once said that knowledge was not power, power is what you do with the information. From that have come discussions asking "then what?" in the sense of a fine line between saturation and actual application.

"Sometime you understand what they do and how and sometimes you don't."

Do yo mean technically or socially?

Spell check has made me into even more of a spelling idiot just like calculators have done for my mathematical brain.

The Computer, has in a way provided a means of making a living for the past 15+ years. It's also a means for research & sharing information for personal activities on forums, blogs etc. Just as one might use their car to get back and forth to work, and then use the same tool to travel to camp or go fishing for example. That hammer & saw isn't intended just to pay bills.
This forum for example has helped me be a better 7 user. I have an intererst in renewable/solar energy, have for a long time. The computer as a tool has advanced that from just research into a complete off-grid set up at camp. I certainly don't keep that information to myself, fellow enthusiasts share knowledge and help 'newbies'.
What I'm saying is I have used the computer as a tool to better & maintain my life. From work to shopping I see it as part of living. That doesn't mean it's all good, but we can choose to share benificail information and I think that in part makes you a better person.

I don't know if it's made me think better or that there is more info to think about. Does more equate with better? Something more to think about.

Yes, the dumbing-down aspect of dependence. It's one of the reasons why I divide writing between longhand and keyboard text. Same for math, I refresh now and then on working things out with just paper and pencil. Perhaps 'old school' but there is something satisfying about it. I've even considered writing out html in longhand but haven't gotten around to it yet. :)

Is the other side of that coin much better solutions? :)

Sounds like a simple and logical regard of it. :)

What I wonder about - as do others - are those on the other side of the equation, who don't make a living from it, who are on the receiving end and sometimes find that reception un-inclusive. Mind you, I'm not a candidate for altruistic sainthood but I do think about the equation.
