    1 week from today, we'll be hoping for the news of a win! If not, please know that it's absolutely ok. We had an amazing run! Friend request opt-out?

It seems the Reputation system gives badges for positive participation & whatnot, but it also seems that if I get commended for a post, there is a Notification made and a Friend Request I have to respond to? Is that right? Is there any way to opt-out of these so that I don't have to deal with them...
Could anyone explain what the friend request is for?
