    Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
    What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
    Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
    Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
    What's in a name? that which we call a rose
    By any other name would smell as sweet;
    So GIF would, were it not GIF call'd,

    Jif is not logical. I really do not care what the inventor says about its pronunciation, for me it's GIF not JIF. The reasoning behind this is the same as in why we call ourselves Geeks not Jeeks.

    There are counter arguments.
    George Bernard Shaw (GBS) was a famous Irish writer. He wanted to reform English spelling so that it was more logical. He asked the following question as an example:
    How do we pronounce the word "ghoti"?
    His answer was "fish".
    How can "ghoti" and "fish" sound the same? GBS explained it like this:

    • the gh = f as in rouGH
    • the o = i as in wOmen
    • the ti = sh as in naTIon
    "Ghoti" = "Fish" | EnglishClub.com

    I think jif is fine, how do we pronounce "gel"? Or "gelid".

    All the words with "ough" have to be very confusing for a non-English speaker to learn without having grown up with it. When pronouncing gif it sounds awfully like "gift".
    More conundrums,
    all, awl
    Ball, bawl
    been, bean

    If the white house uses the hard-g pronunciation, then it's obviously wrong.

    That being said, who cares? It's like arguing if the Linux mascot is a Adélie Penguin or a King Penguin.

    Good examples Nigel, or is it Nijel? The Singer, Sade, pronounces her name as "Sharday"

    I don't care either but it's a fun discussion. The Linux mascot could be a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Penguin too.
