    I believe it's actually Raif rather than Ray - Raif is a "posh" older pronunciation of Ralph with a silent L :)

    not forgetting that the surname Cockburn is pronounced co-burn

    like rooster coburn.

    rooster cockburn seems a little bit iffy despite my love of poultry.

    or the Cornish bird the chough that is pronounced chuff

    Spelt GIF but sounds like JIF - the English language must be a right pain in the a*s to learn, and then we have slang mixed up with it as well - ent ya
