    Village Barbers

A man, who has just moved into the village, decides that he needs his hair cutting. So he goes off to look for the barbers shop. He finds that the village has not one but two barbers shops.

He takes a look at the first one. The shop is a complete mess, with piles of hair on the floor and the barber himself looks a complete shambles, his own hair looking unkempt.

He then takes a look at the other barber shop. There he finds everything neat and tidy, with not a thing out of place and the floor spotless. The barber himself is also well turned out and his hair neatly styled.

The man now has a dilemna. Which barber should he go to? Both charge the same rate, so he cannot take that into consideration.

Which barber would you go to, and why?

To the first barber of course... he is so busy cutting hair that he has no time for appearances ... The first barber is a cheap imitation .. he lives in Gainsville..

That is correct in so far as he chooses the first barber. But why doesn't he choose the other one? After all, the second barber's shop is all neat and tidy and fresh smelling, unlike the first one which, by its description, implies that it smells (and looks like) a pigsty.

The second barber is so neat and clean because everyone knows he is a terrible barber and gets no business.. where as the slovenly barber does such a superior job that his patrons will put up with his appearance and smell, just to have him cut their hair....

    Do I get a prize?

    You're almost there.

Here's a clue: How many barbers shops are there in the village?

The first barber, because the second barber has neat and tidy hair which has been cut by the first barber. The second barber does a terrible job so the first barber will not have his haircut there.

Funny, because I thought that you had already visited the first one. It sure would explain the piles of hair on the floor!

    We have a winner... MrMephitis.

As there are only 2 barbers in the village, each obviously cuts each others hair. The first barber cuts the second barber's hair and makes an excellent job of it. On the other hand, when it comes to cutting the first barber's hair, the second barber makes a complete hash of it and it ends up looking like a complete mess.
