Chromecast Update
So far so good, mostly,
In the box.
1. The Chromecast dongle.
2. A short extension lead in case fitting is awkward.
3. A USB power lead, which can be plugged into a convenient USB port if the TV has one or,
4. A USB mains charger.
Installation for me was painless.
1. Plug in the dongle and connect the power.
2. Select the appropriate input on the TV.
3. Download to your PC the configuration program and install .
4. Run the installation wizard which takes you throgh connecting it to your wireless netwok.
5. It downloads and installs the latest microcode then reboots and is ready for use.
You will also need the Chrome browser and the Google cast extension for it. I already had Chrome and the installation wizard downloaded the extension.
Chromecast works in two modes.
1. For Chromecast aware sites you start the playing of videos locally and after you "cast" them Chromecast handles everything including downloading the video stream from the internet. There are currently not many sites. Youtube, Google Play music and videos, Netflix, The BBC iPlayer and VEVO are all I have found so far.
2. For unsupported video sites the PC does most of the work and just transfers the video stream over the wireless network. This is very CPU intensive. My laptop was regularly running at over 50%. There is some loss of quality here.
You can also play local video and music files via the Chrome browser (there is an extension to help with this) but this also is CPU intensive.
Finally there is an experimental feature to cast the entire PC screen. This also is CPU intensive.
On the whole I am impressed with the device so far.
