Very well Jack. You named a few. When I see the kids leaving school - and I am talking relatively little kids - they all hang on their cell phones or are texting. I don't think that is a good development.

Same in the planes. The plane has hardly landed and half of the passengers are on their phones. I am sure there are reasons, but why did we not have those reasons 25 years ago.

The other day I told a lady off that was standing behind me in the queue at the register in the supermarket. She kept babbling into that phone with a loud voice - and nothing but nuisance. I was really disturbed and asked her to shut up (old German habit). She did shut up and peace returned.

Again, self control is not a common trait.

If parents are letting electronics babysit or raise their kids then it's the parents fault not the electronics.

A good point you made about the airplanes, since they are debating whether to allow cell phone use during flights, that is going to be a recipe for many a brawl.

It must be an old Irish habit, too. I've gotten after people over loud cell phone use, especially in doctor's office where their use is frequently prohibited (and clearly post so) and in theaters. I rattled one dolt's cage a bit when I walked by and mentioned that cell phones are amplified.

When I was a boy, circa 1958-62-ish, I would work for my dad painting new homes at times. One we worked in had a telephone in <gasp> the bathroom on the wall next to the throne, unheard of!

If the phone rang when we were out of the house no one would know till the person called back, no answering machines yet, or affordable ones. Nowadays as was pointed out you see kids, 7-8 years old running out of school with cells and poking them as they run.

That's another bitch of mine - what's the big attraction of texting?!? A phone IS an audio device after all, I hate texting. Having said all this I do carry a cell all the time if I don't forget where I put it. The good woman also has one and they are our only phones, no landlines.

Sorry Scott for the derailment, but these threads are fun. :)

My two cents on social media:

I had never thought I will defend social media in general and Facebook in particular, but in all honesty being an ex-pat who wants to communicate and stay in touch with a large family spread around in various countries on a few continents, social media is for me the easiest, fastest and cheapest way to manage it.

On a typical day I can have a chat with a niece in Finland on Viber, see photos from my brother from Hong Kong on Facebook, post a photo to Instagram for my sister to see, see a video of my cousin's sons playing football in Dublin on Facebook, laugh for Dinesh' joke on WhatsApp and end the day with a Skype video chat with my son. All this either from my couch or on the road using mobile phone.

All this free of charge as I would have the Internet connection in any case even without these services.

About the original topic: I believe I would have reacted exactly as Indianacarnie did, deleted my account on a web service if they only gave me the option to join a certain social media in order to continue my membership. As I already am in Facebook I might have accepted the conditions in this case but I most definitely had not joined a new social media site only to access another service.

A good discussion is going on here. Some valid points have been made on both sides of the issue.

Frank what color font did you use? It appears black on the SF Dark theme.

Clicking "Quote" you can see the formatting of the post you are quoting. In this case, this is Franks's previous post

A good discussion is going on here. Some valid points have been made on both sides of the issue.
He is using font color #000000 which is black.

That's odd Kari, thanks for the info. It doesn't work that way for me. Here's what I see when I quote his post and I never see the format tags.

That's odd, must be a settings issue. I just tested using various skins, I can see the formatting using any of the available skins.
