Hume calls for caution against such inferences in the absence of any explanation of how the ought-statements follow from the is-statements. But how exactly can an "ought" be derived from an "is"? In other words, given knowledge of the way the world is, how can one know the way the world ought to be?

That's because Hume understands that science can never prove anything, it can only provide raw data - which must then be interpreted.

BUFFY: "I don't trust you. You're a vampire. Or is that an offensive term? Should I say 'undead American'?"

One day, a small crippled bird was found on a dusty road high up in the mountains. A monk was passing by and saw the helpless critter. Seeing the bird was cold and tired, the monk decided to help the bird by placing it in a pile of fresh donkey poo to help keep it warm, then left to go about his own business.
The bird was so overjoyed with gratitude from the monk, it sang a little happy song.
Not long after, a hungry wolf heard the little birds song, uncovered it and gobbled the little feathery bird.
Moral of the story:
Its not always an enemy that gets you in the shit.
And its not always a friend that gets you out of the shit.
But if you are in the shit, its best to keep your mouth shut.
