Well I don't have to get up any particular time now I'm retired but I do need to be up on a Friday and I've just put the time I need into it and it showed me that I need to go to sleep at the time I do settle down anyway.

I still find it hard to believe someone would need an app to tell them what time to hit the rack to get however many hours of sleep they need by the time they need to wake up. Math was my worst subject in school (and that was half a century ago) and even I can figure it out in a few second.
its not about the amount of sleep you get but the state you awake from it.
if you wake in a deep ram sleep from the alarm ringing then you will be sleepy, groggy and just still tired.
if you awake naturally without an alarm clock you will have awoken in the correct sleep state. refreshed!
the idea of the sleep calculator is to calculate when is the best time to go to bed so the cycle will end when your alarm is due to wake you, thus waking you during the natural cycle that wakes you refreshed.
its not about going to bed at a sensible time so you get a good nights sleep. we can all do that and still wake groggy.
its about waking during the correct cycle, you can still feel refreshed on much less hours sleep if you catch the cycle right.
actually ,this page here explains it far better than i can...
