Win 7 isn't going anywhere. All this means is manufacturers will no longer be able to load Win 7 onto new machines destined for consumers (machines going to businesses get a little longer). Win 7 itself is going to be around until 01/14/2020.

    MS really loves losing money.

I foresee an increase in the deployment of pirated versions of W7.

Indeed; i already knew that like Lady mentioned; windows 7 isnt going anywhere until 2020; This is just some info I came across as i was browsing yahoo's site. I just hope for one that when windows 9 launches; its nowhere near the layout that 8 is; as a lot of people cant stand the "tiles" layout of windows 8; which is why I am sticking with windows 7 until the very end of its life as decided by Microsoft.

I presume from this that come October 31st we're going to see nothing but OEM copies of Windows 7 Professional over at Newegg and the like. Nothing I find particularly problematic, but still not really nice news.

No, what the article is referring to is that after the 31st, manufacturers will no longer be allowed to install any flavor Win 7 on computers destined for the retail consumer market. Whether OEM copies of the various flavors of Win 7 will still be available or not is a completely different issue.

As far as it not being nice news, M$ has extended the date past when it wanted to do this. Win 7 has been out since 2009; you can't expect M$ to keep selling it anymore than to expect an automobile manufacturer to keep making the exact same model year after year. F150 models, for example, typically have only four year model runs with running changes still going on during each run.

If you want to keep Win 7 and/or use it in future builds, you better snap a few OEMs now while you can because they won't be out there much longer. I'm glad I snagged a couple of extra retail copies (one Ultimate and one Home Premium) while I could still get them.

Over in the topic that Brink posted on this subject, the link to the Windows lifecycle fact sheet states that Home Basic, Home Premium, and Ultimate will be no longer shipped out to OEMs for preloading as of October 31st, with Windows 7 Professional's phase out to be announced at a later date with 1 year notice.

So if I'm reading this right, past October 31st I'd still likely be able to obtain OEM copies of Windows 7 Professional from Newegg/NCIX/your favorite computer store. After all, technically when we use OEM licenses we are "preloading" Windows installs for ourselves by personally playing the part of the OEM.

I do definitely agree with this in terms of snagging 1 or more copies of windows 7. I only have the 1 copy that i used to install windows 7 on this computer; but I will still have the disc for awhile up until micrsoft stops putting out updates for 7. At that point i will have to evaluate the situation and see what options I have.
