Latest scam call: Windows Refunds Dept

Called to land line here today. Last week it was "Windows Technical Support" claiming their servers were showing infection by Trojans on my PC. Sounded like a boiler room in the Phillipines. Answered yes when I asked if he works for MS, US when I asked his location. Hung up when I asked for his number.

Today it sounded similar but this time creepily addressing me by my first name, heavy accent, introducing himself as Mark Williams, manager from the Windows Refunds department. Said he saw that I had recently bought a new PC (true) and had overpaid for Windows. Again would not give me his phone number. My CID captured it as ACS V EXPANS which I could redial at 1 347 753 9068 answering "If you'd like more information about Asterisk Dial 2 now... If you'd like to test out the voiceover IP capabilities of Asterisk, dial 500..."

My guess is they are raking in credit card numbers of unwitting victims. I wonder if banks like mine which protect against fraudulent charges, or like my Dad's who wouldn't let him send money to an account they' flagged, are getting any traction on this.

I wonder if being able to capture their CID info might help. It could be a phone laundering site for overseas scam operations.

Where did you buy the machine ?

I'm guessing they don't really know that much, but are fishing (or phishing). He couldn't answer the store name.

I just got told that if I didn't accept their refund they would shut down my computer. Revoke and future computers being licensed.
I have talked to these people too long and am very frustrated.

Hi Deblewis62 and welcome to sevenforums. This is a scam Microsoft will never call you and tell you there is a problem on your computer. Now if you have an issue and CALL THEM they may call you back but only if they cannot resolve the issue on the first call. Do not worry there is most likely absolutely nothing wrong with your PC and they were trying to rob you of your hard earned cash. If you have an issue this is the forum to ask a question in, there are a lot of volunteers here to help. I personally have been called several times and it always makes me laugh that someone would tell me my machine if faulty as I am a total geek and have to have the machine running perfectly. They are scammers and you should hang up, ask them for their phone number or blast an air horn down the phone. You could also let your local law enforcement know to get the word out there to the local community so no one falls for this dispicable trick.

Ask them to please hold on for a minute, set the phone down for 10 seconds, then come back and hang up, works every time.

Or even go away for 10 mins and come back later.

My Daddy used to do that to telemarketers. If I have time, I play with them until they give up on me; otherwise I rip them a new one or few and hang up.
