Yeah, dang state keeps putting a picture of some old man on my licenses. Ticks me off.

Ditto on email and telephone. I'm in a FB and Twit free zone.

Why is it scary? If you purposely upload pictures or any data about you to public sites that are specifically designed to make that info public, what's the big surprise?

Eh? Well it's scary because if you didn't upload an image yourself you may still be identified with the software. Say perhaps someone takes a group pic at a weeing, graduation, picnic, etc, each person could be identified although they had nothing to do with it being uploaded to a public site.

In this case it was not even a picture of the person who\s ID came up but a picture of his father that died 25 years ago. And it was not an uploaded single picture but it was embedded in a piece of crafting art.

They would be able to identify you in that way if you had previously uploaded a picture of you to your own FB, otherwise, it would just be "an unknown face".

You keep on believing that. Here in the US anyone who has a drivers license has a photo on it and are online via the bureau of motor vehicles. The government could, and will, use it to ID "unknown face" easily. It does not have to be on FB or any social media.
