Here's something else to ponder on! Finally someone did a review on sub ohm tanks since there are enough coming out now! VapingCheap just put one out.

With 2015 shaping up to be “the year of the Sub Ohm Tank”, at least in part, I figured that a comparison review of some of the most popular sub ohm clearomizers was warranted. Now, with every manufacturer and their mother vying to get in on the sub ohm tank craze, choosing which sub ohm tank to buy can seem like a daunting task.
    Best Sub-Ohm Tank Comparison

That covers several tanks including the Atlantis V2 3ml and Horizon Artic tanks. The Atlantis Mega as I was saying before is a 5ml tank with an AFC on the drip tip being seen for that as well as the V2. Aspire Atlantis Mega

I was really interested in that Artic. Especially since it was made to feel like a Kayfun or with wide open airflow for sub ohm builds.

Then it was mentioned there was no RBA. Thats a deal breaker since thats a must for me. Once you start wrapping your own coils, and making your own wicks, you'll never want to buy another one of those heads again. It's not only much cheaper but they are leaps and bounds better too. At least IMHO.

Real bummer. Like everything about the Arctic until that.

The Artic is a looker! As far as RDAs I still haven't found any with capacity where the Atlantis Mega would be a consideration if I hadn't already invested in the 5ml replacements for the first version.

As for the first RDA here was a Big Dripper clone I spotted at Amazon and decided to give a try to a No Go when it simply wouldn't fire either with the two premade 24awg coils it came or a fresh one made up. As of this time since late October early Nov. when the Atlantis was first seen I have only replaced about 3 or 4 stock coils to this day which seems to confirm the early bird on the coils lasting months without fuss. I still haven't given up entirely on the RDAs but will be seen to later.

The older SMOK Tumbler tanks with the Smoktech coils were rebuilt a few times to see if the life on those could be extended but not worth the bother while for the smaller eGo style tanks for those who run at the low volts, watts not wanting sub ohm or more they can become a nuisance changing the coils every second week at the longest for steady use. I keep a few of those going however for a certain selection of flavors best run at the lower temps since they don't do well even in the sub ohm at the higher watts.

With the VW stuff of course you get to adjust the watts to find the best vape for each at 0.5ohms over ending up with a mismatch of resistance if two rewraps don't come out equal. The Aspire silica coils have been economical considering the ready to go convenience compared to the older stuff I had been using. What sees those last even longer of course is having several mods rather then using just one or two constantly I go back and forth from depending on where I am or doing.

I think one of the main reasons the RDAs grew so big so fast is that despite the rapid influx of higher wattages no one had the tanks to run on anything! First it took years for the Much Needed Bottom Coil BCC, BDC, and now BVC tanks to arrive finally to see you get something sadly needed in the premade coils and just lately some of the latest sub ohm tanks are now able to handle the higher wattages upto 100w. The temp sensors now being seen as well as the VW mods automatically adjusting the voltage according to the resistance are making the head way that had been lacking.

See thats another reason I like building my own.

I will build a new coil once a week. But I do a Dryburn, and rewick Daily. Even if Im vaping the same flavor.
I do this because some flavors may gunk up the coil (Especially super sweet juices) , so you can keep it clean and prevent that nasty taste.

And another is I just like a fresh wick and dont like to use them more than a day or 2. Some will go a week or so, but everyones different.

That gets expensive fast buying them premade.

When Im making batches of Ejuice, and testing different flavor combinations, I could easily go through 10-15 wick changes in one evening. Depending how many experimental mixes I am doing.

That's because you are rewrapping with cotton. Granted if you are using Japanese cotton you will see better results. But cotton like any other type of fabric type material absorbs and gums up fast as a rule. With the silica coils seen with the Atlantis I can swap out flavors with each tank fill and only wait for the little of the previous to dissipate before getting the full flavor of the next.

For cleaning with the eventual tendency to gum up I simply drop the small gathering of used coils into something like a travel mug with cover and soak the coils overnight in warm water with a denture cleaner. Some will use rubbing alcohol which I would veer away from since Efferdent will do the job and rinse much easier.

Since the first vape back in Sept. 2012 with the disposables first tried moving on fast to the Bloog cig alikes and finding blank refillable cartridges and later 1.6ml top coiled by them as well as for the Vamo and first eGo batteries the need to swap anything daily would be either one blank worn out fast as expected or the need to soak the long wicked top coiled crap to avoid the burn spots from dry wicking issues commonly seen! The first larger tanks bought for the Vamo V2 were leaky as all H DCT type DCT being the old 510 type of insert or threaded cartimizer you dropped into a tank. The second of those had a locking seal washer type ring on the bottom and still leaked like a sive!

With the mech you end up having the need for high amperage batteries and keeping the resistance consistent while the premade do offer the consistency out of the box. The problem typically seen with the older pre-sub ohm type tanks were obvious as far as lack of vapor production which can also very much damper flavor production forcing people to look at other options and why RDAs took right off! The market being flooded with cheap tanks certainly didn't help any either.

With Smoktech they do have some great stuff at times while you still need to watch for the not so good as well. With Vision the outcome going from the top coiled 1.6ml to the Victory BCC type was no joy as well as other tanks like the SMOK Trophy and Eleaf by iSmoka IClear series that failed on vapor big time whlle the SMOK Tumblers work out well except for the short lived coils. And this was the main problem seen too often.

While many rave about Kanger in contrast Aspire set the pace last year between stepping up with the Nautilus and later Atlantis with the much better coils with the later setting the current trend being seen with all types of imitation and all styles of sub ohms arriving. Some of those however not too good! And that simply brings many back to rebuilds and rewraps. Have been seeing some interesting rebuilding stations that are sure to noticed lately.

Yep, been using cotton. In fact, Ko-Gen DO Japenese cotton.

I find it gives slightly better flavor over other cottons, but not by much.
But most importantly it wicks the best of any type Ive tried. For the most part its wicking ability could easily go un noticed, until you start messing with high VG juices and/or High wattage Sub-Ohm vaping. Then that little extra absorbency really makes a lot of difference.

I am going to try Silica again though. Ive only tried it once and that was back when I was first starting building my own.

Hemp wicks work well too. The only issue I have with them is they give everything a earthy note to the flavor. For tobaccos and such this can be a very good thing. But it doesnt work so well, IMHO, for things like fruity vapes.

When building you have to decide which will work best for the most commonly vaped flavors. How things wick as far as individual flavors and who makes can be the deal maker or breaker at times regardless of which cotton.

Haven't been hearing from anyone else using hemp wicks however. What helps even more for cotton is how well each flavor wicks up in order to prevent the dry burn problems too often seen with the typical long wicked CE2-CE4 clearomizers and tanks. The Bottom fed coils was definitely the maker for seeing progress made! Initially you would hear someone mention a 15drop dripper to sample before the RBAs and RDAs came into focus. Those are good for people who write reviews but not for the typical primary tanks.

Now for the Silica the fear factor was the first in the discussions when the Atlantis and Kanger sub ohm tanks were first announced as many were skeptics about anything ceramic. Yet if you burn cotton that's a plant there to consider while nowhere near the tar ever being seen not even being present as well as any burn spots giving off much of anything but a bad taste left behind.

Silica on the other hand will handle the watts much easier especially considering all the new mods people are looking at. With a half dozen Atlantis tanks in use and only replacing 3 coils in the last few months having bought the first in Oct-Nov and the last two by mid March punching them at 50w at times depending on certain flavors the vape I will report has been tested as smooth. With some favors having menthol present or mixed in afterwards the watts did have to be trimmed down to 15w barely firing to 20w at times with one occasion simply being the need to replace one of the coils. The berry blends and a few others on the other hand saw no problems at 40w-50w. They wicked up real easy to be seeing that regardless of tanks, coils, or watts. What wicks well vapes well!
