I've only spent a few days inside the arctic circle at the top end of Finland in winter but I found it one of the most odd experiences of my life....such a lack of day light is just bizarre.
You get used to it. Anyway, the darkness only lasts about a month or so. This winter, the Sun set last time on 5th of December at 12:27 PM after a 23 minute long "day" (sunrise was 12:04 PM):

... and will be back next Tuesday. Last of January there will already be sunlight for over 5 and a half hours:

    Not for me.

I've only got two weeks in Florida this winter so I'm going to Hawaii to catch some North Shore waves.

The summer compensates this. For example this summer of 2015, the sun rises on 23rd of May at 1:46 AM and will set next time on July 20th at 1:29 AM.

One funny detail, in Northern Finland there's every year a clear increase in child births in early October, just over 9 months after the darkest days of "Kaamos", our word for Polar Night.
