Great input and most welcome. No substitute for camera time but understanding the various and many still and video settings will help me set up for fun outings. I'm also going to set up my custom setting for narrow depth shots so I can quickly capture and move on. Taking lots of pictures and then storing for adobe later. I'll set up for pure raw at first and see how these transfer for me. Have my filters and now two excellent lens and working on sourcing a true wide angle. Boy good glass is staggeringly expensive so I must go smart and slow.

Might be worth checking these guys out as well if you ever need a review of glass and cameras even though they sometimes have a satirical view on photography.

I never use in camera picture modes so this is not an issue with using raw for me - I have colour profiles in Lightroom that match all the picture modes available in camera so it's a one click option if I need it
Same here. I just bring it up for info purposes. I also only shoot RAW and post process in both LR and PS.

BTW Nigel, do you print your images? I do using an Epson 3880.

Yeah I also have a few filters myself but mostly use my polarizer or star filter. Speaking of wide angle and expensive I'm currently trying to decide if I want Nikon's AF-S 14-24mm f2.8 lens, the Nikon AF-S 24 f1.4, or Zeiss' 25mm f1.8 lens - Decision – Nikon 14-24 f2.8 or the 24 f1.8 lens?

I rarely print my own images, although my Dell Colour laser does a quite good job, If I have need for prints I tend to have them done professionally :)

OK, just curious. I do my own, then frame and hang. Sold a few prints as well.

Best overall advice I can give for a beginner is to take as many images as you can - Switch off "Auto" mode and shoot RAW rather than jPegs
I tend to go for aperture priority mode for most shots which gives you better control of depth of field. I shoot RAW and Jpg. RAW gives you some extra dynamic range but even jpgs can be adjusted for white balance.
For me post processing is a must on every shot (maybe I'm a bad photographer but all my images can be improved with post processing). Photoshop elements (PSE) is economical software particularly when used with the TOPAZ plugins. The free FASTSTONE browser is a must for me. It's cropping, straightening and curves adjustment beats PSE IMO.

Great help sites mentioned here! For post processing I found Photoshop more than I need , and the learning curve too time consuming. I'd rather be out shooting. Now I use Lightroom 5.6, and recently have discovered some great plug-ins for that extra something here...Topaz Labs Store - Buy Topaz products. Posted is an image I took 2 weeks ago.
