Scientists to unveil new Earth-like planet

Scientists are preparing to unveil a new planet in our galactic neighbourhood which is "believed to be Earth-like" and orbits its star at a distance that could favour life, German weekly Der Spiegel reported Friday.

The exoplanet orbits a well-investigated star called Proxima Centauri, part of the Alpha Centauri star system, the magazine said, quoting anonymous sources.

"The still nameless planet is believed to be Earth-like and orbits at a distance to Proxima Centauri that could allow it to have liquid water*on its surface—an important requirement for the emergence of life," said the magazine.

"Never before have scientists discovered a second Earth that is so close by," it said, adding that the European Southern Observatory (ESO) will announce the finding at the end of August.

Second and final solar eclipse of 2016

The African 'ring of fire' solar eclipse is set to cast a vast shadow over the continent of Africa tomorrow and will be broadcast by online observatory Slooh.
They will chase the shadow across nearly 6,000km as it moves from the Canary Islands across the continent to South Africa, Tanzania, Madagascar, and finally Réunion Island.
The broadcast will kick off at 7.45am on September 1 and will carry on until 1pm.
Slooh host Paul Cox said: “We're in for one heck of a ride as we follow the Moon's shadow as it races across the surface of the Earth at over 2000 mph!

I had heard that this was to be one of the recovered Falcon's, but the BBC story states that, that is to happen in October....

In December last year, the California-based company successfully landed a Falcon-9 back on Earth after a mission to launch orbiting satellites - a first in rocketry.

It went on to recover five more boosters, with most of them returning to an ocean platform.

The idea is to re-fly these rockets, and the first such "second hand" vehicle is scheduled to launch in October.

I'm sure he has insurance, but this doesn't help Musk's cash flow problems.
