That skill helped me as an 11 year old boy when my mother and I were struggling in the woods trying to cross the border in 1948 from the Russian sector of Germany to the British sector. That border was heavily guarded by Russian soldiers.

My mother had no idea where we were but I figured it out with the help of the sun and the weather sides of the trees - especially beech (which points West in Germany). We made it to West Germany and I only returned 51 years later.

Yeah, I could tell you a lot of war and after war stories. Like when we kids found tons of munitions in the forest that the German soldiers had left and we played with hand grenades and machine gun belts. But then I was only 8 years old.

Or when the German attillery shot the roof off our house because the American tanks were parked in front of the house and they wanted to hit them. In the process one of my friends was killed.

Wars and the times thereafter are no fun. Too much misery for the common people. Give a sword to every warmonger politician and let them fight it out.

Did you ever wonder why birds feet don't seem to be effected by cold.

Thanks Bill. I no longer wonder. My feet could use the system birds have.
