I need help buying a new laptop again

I need help. Here's what I want to find:

    - Intel Quad-Core Processor
    - 8 GB RAM (for virtual machine work, and multitasking)
    - Dedicated video and sound is not a priority
    - Standard size (15" to 17")

Otherwise, I'll take what I can get second hand for cheaper, as long as it gets it's job done.

    Hiya,

just by browsing through Amazon and other web pages, I don't think you are going to find that kind of a laptop for under at least 700 $ but that is up to you of course if you have the funds to spend so much.. Or then you can try to find one that is used and get it a tad cheaper..

Unless I give up 2GB of extra RAM? Can I still perform virtualization and multitasking?

Well as far as I know Windows takes up quite a big bunch of ram like up to 4gigs if I remember correctly so taking out 2gigs of ram would limit your virtualization to linux but you haven't specified so can't really tell.

Well I know about second-hand refurbished Dell OptiPlex SFF desktop on eBay, but it's intel Core processor is 2 or 3 generations older than now. Is it reasonable to sacrifice the more recent Core generations?

Vista needed 4gb's just to function...

After going with Thinkpad, I will never use any other kind. There are types like the T400s that run SSD's and have the wide screen. Though, the T400s is nearly outdated with the ol' core2duo. I upped my game with an I7 x220, but it is a smaller size laptop.

If I were not using a Thinkpad, I would consider Dell, and no others. 4gb's or more RAM is a #1 in my opinion, and I always use SSD.

P.s. Some specific CPU's will not allow for the virtualization of 64bit Archs. You should research your final decisions before you actually buy to make sure it will be fully compatible.
