    Computer Hacking and the Law

    Greetings,

I was watching Mr. Robot episode 1, and one scene in particular got me thinking.

Realistically speaking, if you manage to hack into a individual's computer and discover something more serious, for example, you found out that a CEO's company is being funded by money obtained illegally, you then call/use a web form and submit your anonymous tip. Would the police be bothered with arresting/searching for the hacker?

The whole situation made be remember this article from 2010:

An ex-husband suspected that his ex-wife was being beaten, concerned for the safety of his child, the ex-husband accessed the e-mail account of his ex-wife, and it confirmed what he thought. The charges were dropped because, the wife also admitted she too read his phone messages without permission. However, had she not read/admitted to it, he would have been sent away for 5 years(according to the first article).
