I used to work Renaissance Festivals and all the tenor recorders I saw were just short those last two notes.

That was a good sound for a plastic recorder in the video. A lot of that had to do with the player. I played sax when I was in school through my sophomore year of college (alto, tenor, and bari although I did fool around some with a soprano and a honkin' huge bass sax). I took a stab at various string instruments but they stabbed back. I was a vocalist until after 2007 when my idiot allergies pretty much killed my voice. I had a female a cappella band that performed at several Ren Fests in CA in 2006 and 2007. Think Renaissance Andrews Sisters to get an idea of our sound. It was hard finding and keeping singers that could sing tight a cappella harmony.

A cappella is difficult. All voices have to "match" for it to sound good, smallest deviations from the correct tone can be heard.

It's about the same in small acoustic instrumental ensembles. We sometimes, too seldom take whisky and play together with three of my friends, a lute, a guitar and two recorders, and we really need that whisky because when sober you hear your own and others faults too easily.

The toughest sax to play was the soprano. The slightest variation in embouchure resulted in a huge change in pitch. I could almost lip a full note.

I was lucky (or blessed, if you prefer). I grew up in a Church that didn't believe in instrumental music in the worship services so I was immersed in four part harmony from infancy on. Because of that, harmonizing comes easy for me. Any more now, most people don't have a clue how to sing harmony a capella. I didn't even care if my singers could read music and still had trouble finding them. The funny thing was, most of my life, altos were a dime a dozen. But once I needed to replace the one I had (she was moving to Montana), where the heck were all the altos? All I could find were high sopranos that couldn't even get low enough for the lead (I already had a high harmony singer). I went through several lead singers; it's a tougher job than most people realize because they have to maintain tempo and pitch. I could do it but I had to be available to replace any missing singers and frequently did. Otherwise, I doubled with the alto unless we were doing four part harmony or I was replacing a singer.

I used to enjoy playing the recorder when at school, did play the tenor but started on the descant, did a bit of singing but not that much and tried the piano. My musical education stopped when I left school, circumstances meant I wasn't allowed to stay on at school but had to leave and get a job to start earning my keep.

When I was in school, during the steam car era, they gave us what was called a Tonette to teach notes. Later they called them recorders, I had no idea such beautiful music could come from one. I played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star quite well.
