Out houses oh yes I do remember.
Lots of spiders. You always had to run a stick around the seat to bread the spider webs and run the little critters off. The smell in the summer and freezing your buns off in the winter.
    The good life.

Never had a problem with spiders (mayhap the aroma was too sweet for them?). The dangerous critters were the privy monsters. They would lurk inside the pit and reach up from inside, snatch objects from one's pockets, then drop them into the pit (or, in the case of porta-potties, the "blue soup").

    Lots of spiders.
Yep Jack lots of red back spiders love those places and dark corners. Very painful evenomation and although they are not usually fatal (depends on how much venom is injected) can be with small kids but the pain is long lasting and extreme. I do believe they are very close relatives to the black widow species you have over there. The only difference I can readily see is that the black widow has red on the underside whereas the red back colour is on the top of the abdomen.\Interesting hunting technique - in short weaves a very messy web in dark places and dangles threads down which has sticky blobs on them any beetle or other small prey stick to this and the spider reels them in. You always know when they are indoors as they have a mes of beetle and the like carcasses lying on the floor.

We have redbacks in our area and I always give my gardening boots a good shake out. We also have quite a number of brown snakes and those things will definitely kill you if you don't get urgent medical attention. Never mind the outside dunny those things can find their way inside your house. You won't get them in the water though - we leave that to the sharks.

Yep MJ mate I am near Orange in the Central West NSW and we get the lot - was a shock to me when we moved out here that there are such things as funnel webs too.

Anyway bit OT I suppose all the same it is pleasant to hear you take precautions with boots and also any clothing you leave lying around - white tail spiders

I have been an RN for 40 + years and have seen just about them all - not nice to damned well lethal.
