Query radio active waste

Now I have done some reading re this material and apparently the main reason it is not used for other purposes ie energy production is cost effectiveness. The other thing that sprung out at me was there was a relatively small amount produced so why all the fuss and why cannot the waste be used for medical research and treatments ie producing radio active cancer treatment materials?
