A bit trivial although interesting statistics:

This is the first time in history both finalists from previous World Cup are participating but didn't make it past preliminaries.

Only two times before the qualifying rounds have been played without both finalists from previous World Cup: 1938 the finalists were Italy and Hungary, next games were (due to war and post war time) first played in 1950 when Hungary didn't participate and Italy didn't make it to qualifying rounds. Same thing happened 1966, when 1962 finalist Brasilia's tournament finished in preliminary round, other -62 finalist Czechoslovakia was not participating.

So let's see what we've got here:
  • Italy out.
  • France out.
  • United States advances, and also stunned the world by A) Coming back to tie from a two-goal deficit in one game, and B) Scoring in virtually the last minute to win another game.
WHAT KIND OF A TOPSY-TURVY WORLD CUP IS THIS???

Should call it TTWC instead of FIFA. Being TTWC is TOPSY-TURVY WORLD CUP!

It just shows you pm any Given Day you can win.
There are no guarantee's in life or soccer(football).

It's just the football version of World War 2. France surrender early, USA come in at the last minute and England are left against Germany!

I'm glad you said that and not me.
