The issue extends beyond just one bad outlet. Aluminum wiring is a fire waiting to happen. Aluminum tends to cold flow at room temperatures so it it's difficult to impossible to get a tight connection that will stay tight using conventional connectors. Loosening connections due to cold flow allows additional oxidation that increases joint resistance over time. Joint resistance heat up, allowing even more cold flow and can get hot enough to cause a fire.

He has had only one connection get bad enough to show visible signs of problems (a smoked outlet). How many more are ready to go bad? Pigtailing can alleviate the problem but it requires special compression connectors, compound, a special tool, and a licensed electrician to do the job properly, all of which is expensive.

The aluminum wiring isn't his only problem. The addition of copper wiring that may have been bootlegged (installed without proper permitting) adds to the potential problems, such as code violations that could jeopardize his insurance coverage. In addition, he has a furnace that is on its last legs, which can be hazardous in itself but also means he is facing an expensive replacement in the near future, something that appears to be out of his budget.
