I just realized that's not going to be new enough. We'll need to get 10.6.3 from a third party site.
I was thinking, since the iPad is of 1st Gen vintage, that a version of iTunes that was released about the time the 5.1.1 came about just might be fooled into thinking time had rolled back.

    I really appreciate the help.

I checked the dates and 10.6.3 was released the following month so it is the closest version.

Well, I got it downloaded and in hand. Thanks !

As soon as I finish what I am doing with a batch of pictures, I will surgically remove all traces of the recent version, pick and clean it out of the registry, restart a few times to flush it completely out; then I will install this vintage version and see if things won't work better for me.

    Much appreciated.

Well..., I never had this happen before:

I double-clicked the file and the "run" box appeared; I clicked okay (or run or whatever); in .00873 micro-millisecond, MalwareBytes disintegrated my shiny new downloaded file; then, threw up a notice that a reboot was required.

I don't know whether MalwareBytes is just being overzealous, or if there really is something there that I don't want.

I thought I had better hold off on any further experimentation until I asked about it.

The Trojan thingie in the top line of the quarantine I believe is just eye candy put there to make us think something vital is going on; I have installed the MBytes on several machines over the years and that same quarantined file has shown up in every one after the initial scan; but then, maybe it is something devastating.

    >>> On EDIT: I have since tried another download of the same file, plus one of the next version, with the same results.

Unfortunately that's a potential problem with downloading programs from third party sites. They can come infected. Use this link: Download Apple iTunes Music Store - FileHippo.com

I uploaded the download from that link to VirusTotal and there where no findings. Delete the other one.

Partial Success at last !!! THANKS !!! Without your help and suggestions, I could not have gotten this far.

After first completely purging my system of the new version iTunes, including picking it out piece-by-piece in the registry, I installed the FileHippo 10.6.3 iTunes.

There was a temporary moment of disappointment when I tried to open 10.6.3 and kept refusing to open, giving a pop-up message that it could not load the iTunes data on account of it being too recent for this version or somesuch.
I thought about it for a minute and decided that this might not be such a bad thing.

The JailBreak program redSn0w had previously insisted on failing on account of the new version iTunes was incompatible with it's line of reasoning; but, for reasons infathomable to me, iTunes had to be installed for redSn0w to do it's stuff.

So, even though my newly installed 10.6.3 iTunes refused to open, it was definitely installed.

I double-clicked redSn0w and it ran like the hands of time had been turned back seven or so years.
It immediately found the iPad and successfully had it JailBroken in a matter of seconds.

I went into the Cydia folder and searched through the vast selection of apps for the few that were compatible and looked like they would be an asset to my endeavors and installed them.

Before all this, I had also purged iFunbox from the system, as it had been associated with the new version of iTunes.

I re-installed iFunbox and now have access to countless internal files and folders and supposedly can drag/drop stuff from Explorer (I haven't gotten that far just yet).

Now, if I can just find in iFunbox my 1862 photo images that are definitely installed and viewable on the iPad so that I can organize and add to my collection.

I feel a lot better about the situation now.

    >>> On EDIT: I have just successfully copied a video from Explorer to private > var > media and was able to view it on the iPad with no involvement from iTunes !!!

Now, if I can just get the right app that will allow me to do the same with photos.

I didn't see your questions about jail breaking iOS and I don't have any answers for you on that because I've never done so. You might try iMazing to see if that'll help you get your photos off. I think that you are over my head with the library incompatibility. If you have any further difficulties you might want to go to mac rumors although they will probably tell you to get a new ipad and to get a mac. They may have a suggestion because all I know to do at this point is to wipe your ipad and start over or get a new device. Apple iOS MacOS Help | Fix Mac iPhone iPad | Buying Tips | Mac-Forums

I was in way over my head way back at post 1.

Thanks so much; I could not have gotten this far without your contributions.

As it now stands, the iPad is a lot more useful than it was.

I finally was able to find where the photos are stored and I can see them all on the PC using iFunbox.
The one snag that keeps me hung up is that any images that I add to the Photo folder do not then also display on the iPad; the added images are right there visible on the PC, but nothing I have tried yet will make them visible on the iPad.
