You mean when they ask you for a "2nd" ID? Most places have a sign that says they need "2 forms of ID"

For many years, I got past this by using my Passport, until it expired. Most places got bent out of shape, they could not DENY the transaction I was doing, cos it is a valid Federal ID. Mostly I used it at my own bank, when I wanted to cash a 3rd party check, and they never gave me any grief about using my passport. Until one day I was an a Bank of America, and they were trying to refuse to cash a check written out to me on their bank. So I started yellin' MANAGER, MANAGER, and the manager came out and did it for me. But he said he would never do it again, I told him **** Off, I'm never coming back here, and I never have.

What they really want is a credit card though. I want to know, how in 57,000 bloody blue blazes, a CREDIT CARD can be defined as an ID? About a year after the BoA incident, I actually got a Debit card which was a MasterCard, and it could not be used as a credit card. And then, the very next place that tried to pull the "2 forms of ID" cack on me HAD to take it as my "2nd form of ID".
I won't do business with BOA. Or any other bank, for that matterr, but BOA is among the worst (right now, Wells Fargo holds the title of the worst).

.....as my "2nd form of ID".
Cashing a check requires ID, and makes sense. We were talking about ID needed to get a stupid supermarket "loyalty" card, which just impinges on your privacy. Say to yourself "Why does a store need my ID to sell me groceries?" It doesn't.

Panera's wants my phone number to sell me lunch. Why? so after I spend a few hundred $ on food, I'll get one free cookie, and they'll sell my number to marketers.

The more places you spread your ID around, the more spam calls and spam emails you'll get. I also have various anti-tracking programs on my computers, but that's a whole other topic.

As for news, get it from real news sites, NYTimes.com, CNN.com, BBC.co.uk, PBS.org. Pick one you like and check it daily. You don't need it filtered and slanted through someone' else's site.

The reason the store needs an ID is to prove who you are spam you with all sorts of useless offers and maybe even a coupon for 10% of something that you don't want and never will, it's called marketing and it is now a way of life

Actually, the loyalty card for the grocery store I frequent actually saves me quite a bit of money just at the register and most of the coupons I receive are actually for products I use. Pity the store has been going downhill in quality.

A recent "dirty Trick" we are seeing this side of the pond on TV and in print is ads that give some sort of "amazing" information about how well a product "works" and then adds a line "for verification please email us at ..... " which of course gives them a bunch of addresses of those interested enough to check, to spam with marketing

If you can get away with only a fake phone #, great. I shop mostly in Trader Joe's, which has only one set of prices and no sales, so it's not an issue for me.

Sale items at groceries used to be available to anyone who viewed ads or clipped coupons. And if we didn't have the coupon, the cashier scanned one in.

We all have to decide what balance we want between privacy and perks.

I have 6 email addresses, of which 2 are disposable. You can also get a 1-time email address at guerrillamail.com. But the majority of spam email is composed by bots, by combining billiions of alphanumerics and shooting at every possible combination.

I think we're all pretty savvy here, but the majority of the public doesn't use computer forums.

Right, I would prefer to use a credit union, but I've had a Union Bank account since it was a new bank (name changed from California First National Bank)- I had an account left over from when I worked for them in the 70s and it was called California 1st.
