Fall of the Berlin wall

On November 9th 1989 the Berlin wall came down. It has been 30 years and I don't recall the press saying a thing. Anything by you?

I only know this because I was watching the movie Atomic Blonde a month ago and asked my Amazon Echo Dot what the date was LOL

The BBC website, for one, made note of the anniversary. The press quite often do documentary articles comparing the lives from both sides of the divide, both before and after the event. It is not unusual to hear of people talk of the differences it made to their lives - there are many still alive who remember the event. Perhaps this only happens once a year, I do not know, it is not especially "celebrated" as such, in my country.

You must be pretty young because the event was all over the news media--TV, radio, newspapers, news magazines--for days after it happened (and still was being referred to occasionally for over a year afterwards). I remember it well.

I assumed that the 30 Year anniversary not being mentioned was the issue

There is an issue with the celebration/remembrance of the Fall of the wall as it took place in stages - From Wikipedia

"In 1989, a series of revolutions in nearby Eastern Bloc countries—in Poland and Hungary in particular—caused a chain reaction in East Germany that ultimately resulted in the demise of the Wall. After several weeks of civil unrest, the East German government announced on 9 November 1989 that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Crowds of East Germans crossed and climbed onto the Wall, joined by West Germans on the other side in a celebratory atmosphere. Over the next few weeks, euphoric people and souvenir hunters chipped away parts of the Wall. The Brandenburg Gate in the Berlin Wall was opened on 22 December 1989. The demolition of the Wall officially began on 13 June 1990 and was completed in November 1991. The "fall of the Berlin Wall" paved the way for German reunification, which formally took place on 3 October 1990."

Interestingly enough, it was Mr Gorbachev and his advisers, who started Glasnost ('openess') and Perestroika ('restructuring') in USSR, around about the same time as the end of the Berlin Wall in E. Germany, albeit over a longer period of time.

According to Wikipedia, it was U.S. President Ronald Reagan who challenged Gorbachev to "tear down this wall". Subsequent events in both countries signalled an end of the Cold War that had pre-occupied the West for over 40 years.

They made a big stink about erecting a statue of Ronald Reagan last week. It's now in front of the U. S. embassy overlooking the Brandenburg Gate. Other than that really didn't hear much about the anniversary.
