The Last Straw

On my music rig I had two Windows 7 systems, the original C drive, with Cakewalk Sonar as my DAW, on a 1 TB HDD. I also installed a fresh copy of W7 on a SSD. I now use Reaper as my DAW. But I have maintained the original drive, in case I want or need to use Sonar again. So over the past few days, I got to thinking, why not upgrade the C drive to Windows 10? I did. It activated because I have tried this before, so the digital license was on the machine. I figured I would update to the present, then keep it offline. Then I would have my original drive, with my original DAW, on a more recent version of Windows. I got it updated to the present, but it kept trying to install two more updates, each time getting to 99% and failing. It then of course had to revert the changes. This whole process took about an hour. It did this three times before I downloaded an app that blocks Windows 10 updates. So I figured I had it where I wanted it.

But no, today it once more tried to install the same two updates. Another hour pissed away wating for it to fail and then revert. I spent some time thinking what to do about this. I realized I will never use Sonar again, it's very old software, and my music sounds way better in Reaper. So I decided to obliterate Windows 10. I have to admit, it did feel good. I then installed a Linux system, but only to overwrite Windows. I then deleted all partitions, formatted it to NTFS, and am now using it as a backup for all my orchestral libraries. Ah, much better now.

I think I finally have it out of my system. When I turn on my computer now, it is up and running in a minute. No boot menu, since it's now the only system drive. No other Windows to update, worry about etc. Simplify, as the sage of Concord said a couple hundred years ago. Although Thoreau would probably die of culture shock if suddenly transported to the present.

To mix another Thoreau metaphor, Hercules had an easier time cleaning out the Augean Stables than I've had fooling around with Windows 10. No more! Windows 10, goodbye, and good riddance!

I also make music and i also stick to windows 7 for that, imo windows 7 is the best OS for Music production for several reasons. My Music computer is a windows 7 one, I also like running a lot of old software from the sonar days and earlier versions on many old music stuff. You can do most of this on 10 but some of it needs the older OS.

I just think 7 is good middle ground when wanting to run software as far back as 98 and xp

I'm a confirmed Windows 7-only guy at this point. I'm not a gamer, so the gains by using Atlas, or other Windows-tweaking software, don't really matter to me.

What happened to Microsoft after Windows 7 is a classic illustration of what's wrong with the world these days. There was a time when quality mattered. Now it's all just profit motive. Corporate greed. Nothing else matters. Everyone wants to be a billionaire. All other values have gone to hell. Enjoy what's left of western civilization. It won't be around much longer.

If windows 7 got more love from tech giants and stayed in support it would be a top tier OS still imo, but many apps moving to net8 and others like most web apps and creative type apps using QT then 7's days are only getting shorter well at least more locked in to its time capsule.
ATM this pc i am typing on now is really only good for a few segmented things, like older music software and older software in general. I am already using a ESR browser and many convenient apps wont work unless using really old versions.

Overall i think 7 is still a solid OS. Xp is to old vista and 8 are like what is the point and 10 is good. 11 is eh it needs to be reverted back to being like 10 so much that you might as well just stay on 10.

7 still has a popular following it would be nice for more grassroots type support centered around 7.
