My first PC was a Commodore 64...we used it for games...later I think we might even have started using some ancient form of MS Word on it and a dot matrix printer (which broke every half turn of its spindle) to do school work.

My first PC that I bought was an Amiga 3000.
It had 6MB Ram, 120MB SCSI hard drive and a 14" Multisync Monitor.
Paid $2500 for it in 1992. Used it for gaming and multimedia work.
the following year I upgraded the machine by adding 12MB more ram bringing the total to 18MB, adding a 345MB SCSI drive, a Video Toaster 4000 card, and a 1.78MB Floppy drive. Total upgrades cost me $3400 (the VT4000 card alone was $2500 of that).
Upgraded so that I could start doing 3D work with Lightwave 3D.

I ended up trading the Toaster card for a PC when Lightwave 3D was released by itself, then sold the Amiga when Lightwave was available on the PC since the PC's at the time, Pentium 100-133's, were much faster than the my Amiga and a processor upgrade card for it was about the cost of a complete PC.

I still have an Amiga, a 3000T model that was given to me 12 years ago and I'll take it out of the closet sometimes and play some of my games on it,

Vic 20 with a tape drive as mass storage at first...later then a Single sided 5.25"Floppy drive (~$350in GE) for gaming of course and to learn 6502-Assembler so I could play with the Epromer (Eprom/EEprom programmer).

    Youngsters,
My first computer even predates the intel 4040. God, you people make me feel old.

In case you are wondering, first was self-designed.

My first PC was an IBM PC like this one purchased in 1984:

4.77Mhz (Yup, Mhz, not Ghz) CPU, 256K RAM, 2 360K floppy drives. A color monitor capable of displaying 4 of the ugliest colors imaginable. Used it to play games, write letters and develop software.

I bought my younger brother a Commodore64 in the early 80's. Being seven years younger he was in on all the early video arcade games. He has a Masters in Computer Science now and teaches at a college.

I didn't catch the PC bug until 2002.
HP Media Center XP-PRO with P4 HT 3.0GHz. Top of the line then.
Still running. I gave it to my parents in '05. Still checks the mail and does the pictures etc. for them.
