    I am too....
I remember one bad experience which added to it more.
It was on a school trip....
Yea I had a mental breakdown around about half my grades classmates a few years ago because they forced us on a ride at an amusement park.
So that made my fear worse...
    I love flying....
but yet being high up on a lift, etc... just wont happen.

    How to overcome it,
    No clue
    maybe physco therapy,
no its just not for crazy people.

Have you tried meditation before hand?
    Find some very relaxing music,
Just sit/lay-down for about 10 to twenty minutes minutes clearing your mind.
They focus on what you have to do.
its good for the mental health as well.

Meditation works for a number of things,
Its all about mind over matter,
You have to tell yourself you can do it.

    My mother had a tumor,
everyday she meditated, imagined a little bit of it disappearing each day,
The next month when she went back for the follow up doctors appointment, to schedule a surgery,
It was about 1/4 of its original size.

I'm sure if it can do that it can help you get over getting on a roof :)

(no im not trying to be rude)
