My dear wife Angie (Angelika) and I have had a long New Year's tradition to make a trip to my native Finland to see my family, crossing the Baltic Sea with a cargo ship from Rostock Germany to Helsinki Finland. Always starting the trip on New Year's Eve.

Driving the car to the ship late New Year's Eve, having complimentary champagne with the crew on upper deck and watching fireworks. Late snack and then to the luxurious cabin to bed.

Ship sails 4AM, New Year's Day you wake up in the middle of the beautiful Baltic Sea. Whole day nothing to do, just relax. This ship is no passenger ferry so there's no "cruise program", just a small bar and breakfast / dining area plus sauna & gym. Luckily they have free satellite WiFi! Second night on sea, following morning 8AM ship arrives in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. A week or so with my family, then the same two day trip back home.

Different New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, but we love it. A nice New Year's tradition we both miss, this year was now second time we could not make this trip because we can no longer leave my elderly mother-in-law alone for so long period. Now it's just a couple of days, flying in and out.

Same trip, relaxing in the ship's small bar. Notice I have no glass in my hand. Some error in my wife's camera lens caused optical distortions to this picture, I really don't have such a belly...
