what do mean? There were stores opening up the computers and modifying them and then making you pay the extra fees for the modifications since there were no stock ones available?
What stores did this before Best Buy?

Circuit City didn't have a computer tech service until after BB bought/merged with Geek Squad, so I don't see how CC was doing it before BB was around.

The one thing I thought odd at Best Buy a while ago was a Toshiba laptop I was looking at for my wife. They had one slightly less expensive model and a sign saying "does not come with recovery discs, nor ability to make them". Then, there was another Toshiba model right next to it and it was about $100 and did not have same sign. Using the machines themselves, it seemed that the application icons and executables for the media creation tools was indeed missing on the lower-end model, but existed on the higher model. I never dug into this far enough to determine if this was something that Best Buy was doing to encourage sales of the higher end model, or if it was something that Toshiba was doing to make more money. Either way, I didn't buy either Toshiba.

I have never seen a thing like that. But maybe the cheaper model would have been a good buy. They probably messed it up at the factory forgetting to put a recovery partition on it. But so what - just make an image after the initial install.

But that goes for the buyer of any major piece. Think of all the people that pay hundreds for "dealer options" when they buy a car. And all they get is a little waxing and stuff.

the local best buy here did this to a friend and he managed to get the sale price and 10% off of that by informing them once they opened the box and made changes to the system without his consent it was now considered used by law. he chose to do this on a day when he knew the store would be packed and a raised voice about their practices would cost them sales. you would be surprised what a slightly raised voice at the right time can get a consumer.

Oh, I agree. Buying a car can be the biggest ripoff ever. The salesman go into a deal trying to sell for the highest price and trying to screw the customer the most. == I wish they would just put a price on a new car and stop the haggling procedure. There is no reason for a new car to have a price that can be bargained down. It isn't that way with other major items. Houses to a small degree I guess, but not anyting else I can think of.
