Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a terrible thing

    Hey

Well I dunno why I am sharing this with you guys, perhaps I feel bored at the moment, but anyway, my question to you is : Roughly, how many times in your life have you reinstalled your OS on your personal system ?

Well, If I answered my own question, I would have to say 50+ times, literally that many times, I am only 20 years old and only really began understanding computers within the last 5 years I'd say, before that I wasn't too knowledgeable. Anyway, within a 4 or 5 year time frame, I've reinstalled my Operating System on my personal computer soooo many times, it's unbelievable !

I would format my hard drive and reinstall Windows, for stupid, meaningless reasons, like for example I remember one time, right after reinstalling my OS, (literally 10 mins after the first boot into Windows) Windows Update wouldn't function properly, and instead of asking for help and trying to figure it out, I just you know it, formatted my system and reinstalled it again ! This would go on constantly, and constantly. I would spend hours and hours doing just that ! One would think I have no life ....

Ahh it's enough to drive you MAD !!!

Anyways, I obviously know what causes this, OCD, not only that but sometimes I would just waste precious time clicking everything on within Windows multiple times over and over again. Checking control panel, making sure all of my files are named properly, making sure every program works. This would go on for hours and hours, and really I wouldn't accomplish much. I would love it, If someone took my computer away from me ! I'm kidding...but

lol anyways that's my story, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is bad bad bad.... I am working on trying to overcome it and moving on.

I want to enjoy my computer again, without having to worry about small insignificant details.

Long post, but If you've read it thanks and please I would love to hear your thoughts !

I agree it's not much fun.

it is bad. it is bad. it is bad. it is bad. it is bad. it is bad.

    lol, sorry, I couldn't resist... :)

Seriously though, I have a bit of an OCD issue with certain things too, and it does tend to get annoying.

Thought about seeking professional help JordanJP?

I noticed in another thread you are studying? Has it interfered with your studies and time management? If so, it might be worth seeing someone about it to get some coping strategies. The human brain is a wonderful, fascinating and often terrifying thing...

I wouldn't say you have OCD anymore than anyone else who has a hobby he is addicted to. Some guys spend all weekend watching football. Some guys spend all weekend playing golf. You spend your time on the computer. If it is not detracting from other parts of your life, there is nothing wrong with having an interest in something.

At least it'll be a short drive.

    OCD? Never heard of it.

i have a habit of reinstalling my OS frequently too. sometimes i go on binges where i test a ton of different software's often one's that do the same thing by the time i'm done with this it's usually easier and less time consuming to format my drive and start over with a clean install instead of actually uninstalling everything. then other times i'll do something KNOWING i shouldn't and that it will probably crash my PC but just the chance of it actually working excites me so i risk it. luckily im smart enough to be prepared for most of the issues i cause though

I don't have OCD, I have CDO. It's just like OCD, except that all the letters have to be in alphabetical order

It's not like I installed 7 four times to make sure ALL the files were there.

    Hi JordanJP

Thanks for sharing that with us. I work with people with OCD sometimes and I know it can make you very dysfunctional.

I have one client who constantly washes his hands (so much so they get dry and cracked) He also constantly checks that his door is locked and checks his teeth in the mirror all the time.

This sounds harmless and even amusing but I know it is disabling and disempowering.
He's getting a combination of medication and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and this is helping a lot.

If you feel it's really getting bad please seek help. There are also numerous self help books you could look at to try to control compulsive behaviours.

    Stay well, John:)
