Don't you REALLY HATE these type of advertisments

I can't understand why Business thinks Internet advertising is the most successful form of advertising ever and are pouring loads of money into it.

I usually avoid even LOOKING at them.

But the 1000000% Irritant of all times are those little squares that jusy pop up right over the place where you are reading -- I just click these closed immediately (and in general) never visit that site again --another lost customer.

I would hazard a guess that Internet advertising is HUGELY overhyped.

Loads of people still read "Old Fashioned" papers and magazines.

    Cheers

Don't know about your corner of the globe, but over here some major newspaper companies are closing their doors. I do agree that internet advertising is overhyped and those annoying popups are the last place I would buy anything. The popup blocker does a pretty good job with them though.

The only ones effective with me are the simple banners on the side or top of a site. Sometimes I see something that I catch is interesting and I check out, usually its from the more professional sites and they generally only advertise stuff that has to do with what they talk/sell/use.

The ones that take control of the screen like on ign.com for example sometimes are annoying, attention grabbing yes, but when I see the product again I just remember being irritated.

Personally I hope we dump all but a single circulation of newspaper, while paper still has its value and HDD's are by no means indestructable, we need to take serious note how much paper actually hits the garbage. I personally recycle every little piece at my home, but one day at my work depresses me.

All advertising annoys me to be honest, but especially those that pop up and sneak by noscript and adblock.

One thing I will say with regards to these adverts the reason businesses carry on using them is simple - they work!

It may be on a subconscious level for more net savvy users like the majority of Sevenforums members, but they must work or else the company would not spend time and money on them.

The vast majority of net users do not use the advanced ad blocking software and so are more likely to be swayed by these ads.

The figure on the number of people of click on "bogus" malware type ads proves that the basic concept is a useful one for the business

But you must remember no adverts = no Internet as I know for a fact I wouldn't be paying our $1800 server bill each month out of my own pocket.

I can understand the big publishers like IGN using these annoying ads as they will have a high percentage of repeat visitors who become more and more ad blind the more they visit.

As a publisher my preference is to only use a simple banner in the biggest click hotspot and only serve ads to guests, while this doesn't maximize revenue it pays the bills and doesn't make my sites look spammy.

I don't mind the banners or ads down the sides, just the pop-ups. I realize that hosting a large site is expensive and must at least pay for itself and hopefully even make money. Pop-ups just seem like getting right in my face a screaming. That makes me not want to visit the site anymore.

Problem with advertising is simple - it pays, and it pays well.

Take a looksie at Ask,com (for whom I just saw an advertisement ***ON MY F******G TV****)

That company that was reviled as a borderline malicious adware company just a few short years ago is now *partnering* with the likes of Webroot, Symantec, and other such security 'giants'.

And, like John said - how many of us users (me included) are contributing to the daily, monthly, or yearly upkeep of this site? Or of any *other* site?

Like John said - it wold cost him $1800 per month - that is $21,600 a year (more than some people make) just to keep running these sites.

All you folks that like to block advertising b/c it annoys you - as soon as you start dishing out money to support the websites that you frequent, I'll accept your bitching and moaning and complaints as valid. Until then, you're just like everyone else out there trying to get something for nothing.

And before you go off half-cocked about how you pay for your ISP connection and whatnot - your ISP has *jack* to do with John running these sites (Seven Forums and Vistax64, to name a couple). You are just paying for Internet *access* - unless John is an employee of your ISP or has a family member that is an employees or is a trust fund baby from one of the Veeps of that ISP, your money to your ISP does absolutely nothing to help John foot the bill for these sites.

Well said John G and I would contribute as well but I don't have the means ATM, although I think this is the best and most friendly site on the net and the only one I that I keep coming back to.

Thanks for all your hard work and effort John, Shawn and Mod's hopefully one day I hope I to can show off my support badge for this site.
