Got finally Windows 3.1 installed on a VirtualBox virtual machine, could not get it to work properly on Windows Virtual PC. It hijacked the CPU, making host machine totally unresponsive but luckily it runs just fine on VirtualBox.

Here's a screenshot of that IMO first "modern" Windows, published on March 1992:

Win3.1.png

And then Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista running (quite) smoothly at the same time:

Sometimes it's fun just to play!

I notice the Windows flag starts of in motion, and ending in a stationary position...well it sort of morphed to being in W7.

That is really cool. You opened up some memories for me. I got quite proficient with Win 3.1 and 3.2 and created some really good DOS batch files. In fact the base I was on adopted my menu batch files base wide.

I like 3.1 so much, I never installed 95. I went to 98 when it came out. I also skipped ME and went to XP.

Kari, have you tried to find a working version of Central Point Software Tools for Win 3.xx. It was one of my favorite tools for 3.xx. It had an excellent Windows customization application included. Called my brother in-law the other day to see if he still had his copy, darn he through out of his 3.xx applications a couple of months ago. Guess I'll have to try old windows sites; also looking for a copy of MS Office 4.3. :D

Heh CPS tools rocked :D

I loved 95 when it came out, preemptive multitasking and memory protection were MAJOR improvements, took Apple YEARS to get them and only by switching to an entirely different OS core that they didn't weven write.

But there were a lot of CPS tools features that I sorely missed in the switchover.

Here it is, running. Incredible nostalgic feeling to play with it! This version I found is a bit comical: it is fully English, except menus are in Spanish!

Nostalgic moments with Windows, Part 2

Windows NT 4 running on VirtualBox. It's a shame pre-XP OS's run so incredible badly on Virtual PC. VirtualBox has no problems with these older Windows versions.

Screenshots before any updates. Notice the Internet Explorer version!

Nostalgic moments with Windows, Part 3

Windows 2.0 (386), running in VirtualBox:

Win 2.0.PNG

This evolution of Windows, IT and computing is fascinating. I was cleaning my drawers a couple of days ago and found this:

AB_level.png

In the beginning of this millennium Finland was the first country to standardize so called citizens computer skill testing, a system today used in all European Union countries, though still quite unknown to citizens.

There was two levels, a normal so called citizens test, A-level, and AB-level for professionals. Spring 2003 I was on a holiday trip in my native Finland, and a stupid bet in a pub led to some phone calls to a couple of ministries, to get a permission to make the test even I did not live in Finland anymore.

So I did the test. When I now look this document, given only 7 years ago, it shows the speed of Windows evolution. In the test I used then state of the art OS and software, the absolute latest in evolution. Seven years to today and Seven.

15 years ago when I was 7 years old, I would have thought Bob was very neat and nice to use. Especially considering the era and my lack of knowledge of computers at the time, that would have blown my mind. Now, it's more like a nostalgia trip. As far as Windows ME, I have a copy of it. Any time I try to install all its updates though, right after I do it, it refuses to open IE and it goes all crazy on me. Just a testament to what a great OS that really was. (And by great, I mean greatly flawed)
