Hackers Disrupt Australian Government Web Sites.

Hackers have shut down several Australian government Web sites as a protest against a proposed Internet filter that targets pornography and criminal sites.

The Web site for the Australian Parliament House was down for almost an hour and the Department of Communications site also experienced difficulties, the Attorney-General's Department said in a statement.

Filtering porn is about as effective as the efforts to stop piracy. What's next - banning Linux?

NEWS FLASH: Australia's filter may affect access to Linux sources.
Did the drafters of Australia's new Net censorship legislation ever imagine that their rules might ban Linux? After all, the Linux source code has quite a few instances of the word "****" sprinkled throughout, mostly as commentary about problems with software. Can an operating system be considered unsuitable for minors?

"The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as government is perceived as? working for the benefit of children, the people happily will endure almost any curtailment of liberty." -- Adolf Hitler, 'Mein Kampf'.

A slippery slope although I think their intentions are genuine and the sites they say they are targeting are definitely worth the consideration of filtering. It's also another case of once started how and when will it stop, and who is going to determine what sites will fall under the law, thus the slippery slope. I think the Hackers were showing them it's not going to be a easy task to accomplish. Thanks for keeping us up on this JMK.Fabe Oh and of all the people to quote, come on.
