The only reason I am not materialistic, is that I don't have enough money.

I'm with you bigmck, I've got a six figure bank account, now if I could just do something about that negative sign in front.

To be serious though, it really is all relative. I'm a recovering addict (7 years clean and sober) and there are days that making it through the day is more important than any material thing you can think of. I think that when you've been at such a low point in your life that you have no material things and you want to rid yourself of the only thing thats left, it helps you appreciate the real little things.

Just had a look back over some of the other answers (I know!). Grimmjow makes a good point, but being a tech geek and wanting the best computer in the universe is not the same as being materialistic.
It probably has more to do with addictive personality types.
I know guys with amazing cars/hi fis/cameras who have rubbish accommodation, no clothes, no nothing else.
Being a materialistic person is more about your whole attitude to life and other people I would have thought.
    Just my thoughts:)

I do like having things....it helps to make working day in and day out more enjoyable. However, I'm not obsessed with having things and I have no debt for the things that I own. If I don't have the money for it, I simply don't buy it.

I think you hit the nail on the head John. I agree completely, and congrats on the 11 years. There is a difference between being Materialistic and simply enjoying material things. One is an attitude toward life, the other is simply enjoying life. Just look at pparks1 above me. He/she has it figured out. Congrats to you to pparks1. Those are golden words.

In other words, do you need possessions and "toys" in your life in order to bring you happiness ?

I think before in the past I was more materialistic compared to today. Don't get me wrong I still like my "gadgets" and whatnot, but I realized that there's more to life than those things.

    How about you ?
In answer to that question my answer would be no, possesions do not bring me happiness, people do. Yes it's nice to have new stuff and buy things when you have worked hard for them but I do not pine for things I don't have and I do not require all the latest gadgets or designer labels to keep me happy. In all honestly I'm a cheap bird with relatively simple tastes.

Yeah its great to have all the latest stuff if thats what you want and I'm pleased for those who do, however, I tend to find materialistic people to be pretentious
and shallow and their whole world would cave in if they didn't keep up with the jones's and to me that's just SAD! Besides if you joss it you can't take it with you.
