There was a referendum in WA when they trialled it but it was defeated.

edit: just realised you are from WA

They are enlightened in WA. Not so the Eastern States IMO.
[To the best of my knowledge there has been no referendum in NSW, Vic, ACT, SA or Tas.]
[BTW. Am currently in Victoria.]

True, I am well aware of what happened re WA. I did originally mention the Eastern States for obvious reasons..........
