Windows 7: pc world rip you off???

I paid for RAM installation once, or rather a friend did when I was around. She wanted her laptop upgraded quickly, and I didn't have the knowledge of system limitations, and didn't feel comfortable guessing at the last minute.

We decided to have the people at Best Buy load the memory for us. It ended up being a good thing, because the system apparently only took 1.5G of memory, one 512MB chip, and one 1GB chip at max. I had assumed with 2 slots that 2GB was a possibility. The person opened 2 packs of memory to install and discovered this by trial and error. In effect it cost us less to pay for the work than to buy 2 chips and discover that one didn't work after opening the package...

All my knowledge is self taught as well (of course, I have only had about 12 years of playing with computers), and I build my own systems now.

Every time I go into the BestBuy close to me, I look at the prices Geek Squad charges for things, and I just start laughing.

I know one time I broke something in my boot loader, but had to go to school, so my Mom took it to Geek Squad to tell me what was wrong and fix it. They charge $70 just to run a damn diagnostic program on it.
They had NOT A CLUE what was wrong, nor would they have figured it out. (It turned out to be a disconnected CPU Fan)

That was the last time I will ever even consider using them. Though they do provide a great price comparison for customers.

You should talk to some of the floor salesman in the computer department, you'd really get a laugh

I had to "correct" a salesperson on several occasions because he was trying to baffle me with bulls..t in "his" understanding of Windows 7. I had to inform him that just because I didn't work there didn't mean I didn't know anything about computers.

He got the point when the floor supervisor, who knew me, came over and validated my credentials. Quite funny actually

Oh, I have. Some of them are clueless.
When I look at computers there, it is always fun to ask them for information about the computers, and they read the tag and are like "It has a dual core processor, and it's pretty fast... There is a lot of RAM too, like 3 gigs."
I tell them "I can read that. Can you tell the the CPU speed, and the L1/2/3 chache? Also, what are the RAM timings? What speed are they? Do you know what the clock on the video card is?"
Most of them start looking at the box in confusion.
I laugh.
