pc world rip you off???

Ya, I think people just lost there minds or something. Its like giving your son you're credit card and telling him to use it wisely and he just spends it on that crap for no reason just to piss off the women . . . LOL . . .

Yeah, but that is like with anything. If you don't know the intricacies of a subject (in this case PCs), you pay thru the nose. Did you ever understand why a popcorn and a soda in a movie theater costs $8 (or more).

If you know nothing about PC's, 7 forums will teach you more than you will probably ever want to know - but you'll end up knowing it anyway. Free, too. LOL - charging for RAM upgrades - I bet they don't know that a PSU upgrade is probably a better idea from the cheap nasty factory unit that was stuffed into their PC's.

We need to remember that there are still masses of people intimidated by computers; even the word "computer" sends people running. A lot of us are considered geniuses when we tell older folks we work with computers, even if we do nothing but turn them on. Let's not forget that today's generation are growing up with computers, the older generation didn't.

And as smarteyeball has stated - If there's money to be made...

But yeah I have to agree that the PC repair industry is a ripoff as a whole.

I definetly have to agree, i would assume that most of PC worlds customers at the tech desk are the older generation. But i do thank the fact that all the older people i know come to me and not some greedy crappy shop that would probably make things worse anyway.

Speaking as an 'oldie' - I only got into computers in 2003. I soon realised that I wouldn't be able to keep up the 'hobby' unless I learned how to do a few simple things and learned where everything on the PC was 'kept''

To get a call out back then was £30 for the first hour and then - well, god knows...
My first encounter with that was when I realised I needed to put in a bit more memory - £30 for that and £30 for the man to come and do it.

Therefore started my (obsessive) searching on the net for info and cheaper goods. I quickly learned how to get myself out of trouble with help from a good forum and a few computer magazines.

Since then I have only needed outside help twice - once when the actual switch on the tower had died - switching on was beyond me...

Then recently when I just could not get the emails to work on what is now the 'old' computer. I had a new PC. printer and modem.

BUT - Most people I know are just scared they will 'break' the pc. I have a couple of friends who are even too worried to change a folder name without assistance.

Hence the unwarranted high prices for adjustments and repairs in the shop.

We have PC World here in the UK and they are just as much a rip off. It is possible to get a decent price on things if you go through the net on their 'pick up in store' option. I would just say though - They have a vested interest in Norton - I was given a 'hard sell' when I bought a PC there. I like to choose my own programmes.

So, this then, is the reason, I think.

I was like that myself at one point...heck I did break a computer once...I still don't know why it died, but since I got a better system after that I never really looked into it
