    Forum Rules

When a member responded that it isn't permitted to provide a link to a missing system file, I would assume that also means that uploading it isn't permitted either. However, after reading through the rules, I didn't see anything about this. I know that a link for a direct download isn't allowed, and requires a link to the download page, but this doesn't seem to apply here..does it?

The rules includes a catchall that says that anything not specifically stated can be ruled as needed at the moment, but it would be nice if things were clear cut.

A simple single missing system file is perfectly ok to upload or link to in a post.

It's just that instead of direct download links of programs, a link to the program's site is best as long as it's not spam. Any link or download of a Windows feature (ex: Windows Mail from Vista) cannot be posted since it violates Microsoft's distribution policy and probably EULA.

It's a gray line, so it is hard to be clear when sometimes it is ok and sometimes it is not.

    Hope this helps some,
    Shawn

Thanks. That is as I thought it would be, but in the thread this question arose, I got the feeling that any kind of uploading of any system file was a no no. However, I think that you have already dealt with the problem by instructing the OP on how to extract a file from the DVD.
